The Indian government’s anti-tobacco warning requirements for online streaming services, called over-the-top (OTT) platforms, are impractical, according to ad man Prahlad Kakkar. The May amendment to the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products rules mandates the inclusion of anti-tobacco health warnings and disclaimers in audio-visual programmes that depict the use of cigarettes and tobacco products. Kakkar labelled the rule, which has a 90-day window for compliance, as ineffective, adding the government should ban cigarettes if it wants to stop smoking. The comments were made at a panel discussion organised by an Indian think tank.
