During the 2023 Rajasthan Assembly elections, the constituency of Hawa Mahal saw an impressive turnout of voters, with 194,078 individuals exercising their democratic right. Out of this total, 103,578 were male voters, while 90,497 were female voters.
The voter turnout rate in Hawa Mahal for the 2023 elections was recorded at 76.3%, surpassing the overall turnout rate of 74.62% for the Rajasthan Assembly elections. Notably, the 2018 elections witnessed a turnout of 74.41%.
Ahead of the elections, the ruling Congress party under Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot launched several welfare schemes in an attempt to solidify their position and maintain their hold on power. However, opinion polls indicated that the people of Rajasthan were expected to maintain their historical voting patterns.
In the previous Rajasthan elections of 2018, the BJP government led by Vasundhara Raje Scindia lost power as the Congress party secured 99 seats, while the BJP managed to win only 73 seats.
Over the past five years, Rajasthan has undergone significant political developments, with both the Congress and BJP facing internal strife within their respective state units. The Congress grappled with Sachin Pilot’s rebellion, while infighting within the Rajasthan BJP became evident during the distribution of tickets.
For the 2023 Rajasthan elections, the BJP has fielded candidates in all 200 constituencies, while the Congress is contesting in 199 seats and has formed an alliance with the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) for one seat in Bharatpur. The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) is also participating in the elections, fielding candidates in 185 constituencies. Furthermore, Hanuman Beniwal’s Rashtriya Loktantrik Party has placed candidates in 78 seats. Overall, 1,692 male and 183 female candidates are vying for the 200-member Rajasthan Assembly.
It is important to note that the polling for the Karanpur constituency was canceled following the demise of the Congress candidate, resulting in voting taking place for 199 seats. Additionally, despite the death of an Independent candidate from the Sri Ganganagar constituency a few days before the polling, elections in that area proceeded as there is no provision for cancellation in such circumstances.
The completion of the voting process now sets the stage for the counting of votes in Hawa Mahal and the subsequent announcement of election results. The outcome will determine the future political landscape of Rajasthan and the course the state will take in the coming years.
