Israel Risks ‘Strategic Defeat’ if Civilians Aren’t Protected, Pentagon Chief Says

Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin has warned that Israel risks a strategic defeat if it fails to protect Palestinian civilians in Gaza amid its ongoing conflict with militant group Hamas. Speaking at the Reagan National Defense Forum, Austin emphasized that the civilian population is the center of gravity, and driving them into the arms of the enemy would replace a tactical victory with a strategic defeat. He also revealed that he has personally urged Israeli leaders to avoid civilian casualties and prevent violence against settlers in the West Bank.

The United States has become increasingly vocal in urging Israel to exercise caution during the next phase of military operations in Gaza following the expiration of a temporary truce. The Biden administration has cautioned that any campaign in southern Gaza must be carried out with precision, in contrast to Israel’s approach in the initial phase of the war.

Austin stressed that Israel has a duty to respond to terrorist attacks, highlighting the surprise attack by Hamas on October 7 that claimed the lives of at least 1,200 Israelis. However, he argued that it is essential for allies to work together to prevent civilian casualties and ensure humanitarian aid flows robustly. Austin expressed concern that if the conflict ended with more insecurity, rage, and despair, it would compound the tragedy that Israelis and Palestinians have already endured.

To demonstrate ongoing support, the U.S. Air Force has delivered over 54,000 pounds of medical supplies, warm clothing, and food to the people of Gaza, with additional flights expected in the coming days. Austin reaffirmed that the United States will remain Israel’s closest friend in the world and declared American support non-negotiable. He denounced Hamas and pledged continued efforts to secure the release of the remaining 140 hostages taken during the initial attack. There are also endeavors to stabilize the region amid concerns of escalating tensions with other Middle Eastern countries.

Austin underscored the difficulty of achieving a two-state solution but maintained that it is the only viable way to resolve the conflict and enable civilians to find a way to share the land they both call home.

In summary, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin has expressed concern over Israel’s risk of a strategic defeat if it does not prioritize the protection of Palestinian civilians in its conflict with Hamas. Austin emphasized the need for allies to work together to prevent civilian casualties and ensure the flow of humanitarian aid. The United States has delivered significant supplies to Gaza and reiterated its unwavering support for Israel. Austin also advocated for a two-state solution as the only viable path forward to resolve the conflict.
