Even though Gossip Girl creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage put the kibosh on any hopes for a reboot with the original cast members last week after Ed Westwick, who played the original series’ Chuck Bass, expressed to viewers on TikTok that he was keen to do a spinoff or reboot, the actor still believes there is more life to his bad boy Upper East Side character.
I think there’s a new story to tell around the Chuck Bass character, said Westwick during an interview at Deadline’s Red Sea Studio in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. I’ve actually got a storyline in mind that could work. You know what made me think about this? I get stopped quite a lot on the street for pictures and people want to talk about Gossip Girl, there are Gossip Girl fan pages, and I’m like, ‘Why wouldn’t we give the fans what they want?’ If this was boxing, or if this was something else, we’d make the fight. We’d give the fans what they want, and I think there’s an argument that that could be applied here.
Earlier this year, HBO Max (now Max) canceled the Gossip Girl reboot, which followed a new generation of New York private school teens who are introduced to the social surveillance of Gossip Girl. That show, which got off to a good start in July 2021, setting a record as Max’s most-watched opening weekend for an original series at the time, didn’t pull the fans in in the same way the 2007-12 CW show did.
Westwick also spoke about his upcoming project DarkGame, a horror thriller about a determined detective in a race against time to stop a twisted game show on the dark web, where captives are forced to compete for their lives.
