Chennai: Tamil Nadu BJP chief Annamalai has defended the Enforcement Directorate (ED) by stating that the recent arrest of an ED officer by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) in the state is an individual’s mistake. Annamalai emphasized that the agency cannot be held responsible for the actions of one individual.

Speaking to reporters in Thoothukudi, Annamalai highlighted that this is not the first time an ED official has been arrested and assured that similar instances have occurred in other states as well.

The statement from Annamalai comes in light of the arrest of Ankit Tiwari, an ED officer who was caught accepting a bribe of Rs 20 lakh from a doctor in Dindigul by the DVAC. Reports indicate that Tiwari had demanded a bribe of Rs 3 crore from the doctor, claiming that the ED might reopen a case against him. Eventually, the bribe amount was reduced to Rs 50 lakh, and the doctor handed over the second installment before DVAC officials caught Tiwari red-handed.

The incident has raised concerns about potential corruption within the ED, especially since the agency is responsible for enforcing economic laws in the country. However, Annamalai’s defense suggests that this is an isolated case and does not represent the overall functioning of the agency.

Critics argue that this incident is a reflection of a larger problem within the ED and question the effectiveness of its internal oversight mechanisms. They demand a thorough investigation to identify any systemic issues leading to such misconduct.

The arrest of Ankit Tiwari highlights the need for increased scrutiny and vigilance within law enforcement agencies to maintain public trust. As this case unfolds, it is essential for authorities to ensure a fair and impartial investigation to hold those involved accountable.
