India Re-elected to International Maritime Organisation Council with Highest Tally

India has been re-elected to the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Council with the highest number of votes. The election took place at the assembly in London, and India will serve on the council for the 2024-25 biennium. This re-election places India in the category of 10 states with the largest interest in international seaborne trade, joining countries such as Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Vikram Doraiswami, the Indian High Commissioner to the UK, expressed his delight and gratitude for the support India received from the international community. He emphasized that this vote reflects the Indian government’s commitment to enhancing the country’s diverse contributions to global maritime operations.

The International Maritime Organisation is regarded as the premier body overseeing the maritime sector, which is essential for international trade, transport, and all maritime activities. The council, as the executive organ of the IMO, is responsible for supervising the organization’s work under the assembly’s direction.

The ongoing 33rd Assembly of IMO, held at the IMO Headquarters in London, commenced on November 27 and will continue until December 6. This assembly serves as the highest governing body of the IMO. Members, associate members, intergovernmental organizations, and international non-governmental organizations participate in the assembly to discuss and make decisions regarding the work program, budget, and financial arrangements of the organization. Additionally, the assembly is responsible for electing the council members for the next two-year period.

India’s re-election to the IMO Council reaffirms the country’s dedication to promoting and developing the domestic shipping sector while contributing significantly to global maritime operations. This achievement is a testament to India’s continuous service at the organization and its commitment to ensuring the safety and sustainability of maritime activities worldwide.

As a member of the council, India will actively participate in shaping the future of the maritime industry, making decisions on maritime safety, pollution prevention, and other critical matters. India’s role on the council will not only benefit the country but also contribute to the broader interests of all member states invested in international seaborne trade.

India’s successful re-election to the IMO Council highlights its prominence in the global maritime domain. The country’s commitment to promoting safe, secure, and sustainable shipping is recognized by the international community. With its highest tally in the election, India’s voice will continue to be influential in shaping policies and regulations for the maritime industry.

India’s ongoing efforts to expand and develop its domestic shipping sector show its determination to strengthen its position as a key player in international seaborne trade. With this re-election, India has yet another opportunity to showcase its commitment to the industry and contribute to maritime operations on a global scale. By serving on the IMO Council, India is well-positioned to contribute positively to the future of the maritime sector and promote the interests of all member states involved in international seaborne trade.
