IIT-Bombay teams up with Meta, NLSIU for AI-based project

The Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay (IIT-B) and the National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bengaluru, have joined forces with Meta to embark on a research initiative that aims to explore the potential of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) in revolutionizing India’s consumer grievance redressal system. This collaboration seeks to leverage the transformative capabilities of AI to enhance the efficiency of consumer courts and improve the overall experience for consumers and practitioners of consumer law.

Leading the project for IIT-B is Dr. Pushpak Bhattacharya from the Computer Science and Engineering Department. According to Dr. Bhattacharya, GenAI technology has the potential to greatly ease the working of consumer courts and streamline the consumer grievance redressal process in India.

Meta, an industry leader in GenAI research, is partnering with IIT-B and NLSIU to build a robust AI ecosystem in India. The project aims to evaluate the applicability of large language models (LLMs) in developing public solutions that can enhance efficiency in the consumer grievance redressal system. Meta believes that this project is crucial in fulfilling its commitment to creating a responsible ecosystem for AI innovation and addressing real-world challenges.

The project is being conducted in collaboration with the Department of Consumer Affairs (DoCA) as a knowledgeable partner. Together, these institutions aim to optimize India’s consumer grievance redressal processes by leveraging cutting-edge technology and expertise. Dr. Bhattacharya, a renowned expert in natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning (ML), expressed his enthusiasm in collaborating with Meta, NLSIU, and DoCA to tackle the significant challenge of question-answering and search within the consumer law domain.

As part of the research initiative, the team plans to explore the feasibility of leveraging Llama2, a large language model, to develop and evaluate a proof of concept for a citizen-centric chatbot and a decision-assist tool in the field of consumer law. The aim is to create user-friendly AI systems that can serve as valuable resources for consumers and legal practitioners.

Dr. Bhattacharya stated that this project is the first of its kind in India, focusing on consumer grievances and data extraction to improve operational efficiency. The team is expected to deliver an intermediate proof of concept within the next six months, with the final project slated for completion within a year. The collaboration and expertise of IIT-B, NLSIU, Meta, and DoCA are set to unlock new possibilities in the digital transformation of India’s consumer grievance redressal system.

To ensure transparency and responsible design principles, NLSIU and IIT-B will release a white paper outlining their risk mitigation approaches and how ethical considerations have been integrated at every layer of the project.

This groundbreaking collaboration between IIT-B, NLSIU, and Meta holds immense potential in harnessing AI technology to revolutionize the consumer grievance redressal system in India. By developing innovative AI solutions, such as chatbots and decision-assist tools, the project aims to empower consumers and enhance their experiences while navigating the intricacies of consumer law. With the mission to build a responsible AI ecosystem, this initiative demonstrates the meaningful impact that technology can have in addressing real-world challenges and optimizing crucial systems for the betterment of society.
