The Leader of Opposition and Bharatiya Janata Party leader of West Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari, has accused the state government of planning to urgently induct 9,000 trainee recruits into the police force in a hasty manner. He claims this is to make up for the shortfall of police personnel needed during the upcoming Panchayat elections. Adhikari has written a letter to the Home Secretary BP Gopalika (IAS) regarding the matter. He said he had credible information from within the department that the West Bengal Home Department planned to deploy trainee recruits into the force during the Panchayat elections scheduled to take place on July 8. Adhikari believes it will not only be unlawful but disastrous in the future, with untrained police personnel being tasked with maintaining law and order. The panchayat polls in West Bengal are likely to be a fierce contest between the BJP and the ruling Trinamool Congress. This is being touted as a litmus test for both parties ahead of next year’s Lok Sabha elections.
