Speculation Surrounds South African President’s Speech Origin
Officials in South Africa are launching an investigation into allegations that President Cyril Ramaphosa’s recent speech on decolonizing education was partially written by an AI language model known as ChatGPT. The controversy emerged after social media users ran sections of the speech through AI-detection software, leading to suspicions that a non-human chatbot was involved in composing the text.
Delivered at a conference in Johannesburg on November 21, Ramaphosa’s speech emphasized the importance of embracing African perspectives and experiences in education. We must challenge colonial theories and practices to build resilient education systems that are [centered] on African perspectives and experiences, read a key excerpt from the speech. This requires a shift away from a Eurocentric worldview to embrace a more diverse and inclusive perspective. Vincent Magwenya, spokesperson for the South African presidency, stated that the presidency does not employ AI tools for speechwriting. However, Magwenya acknowledged that certain remarks included in Ramaphosa’s address had been written by the Department of Basic Education and provided to the president’s office. As a result, the department has been asked to provide the source of the content included in the speech.
While we understand that there are questions about the reliability of ‘AI-detection’ tools, we nevertheless take these reports seriously, Magwenya expressed. The use of AI to produce speeches or any other material is unacceptable, and action will be taken should these reports prove to be correct.
