The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has launched a reviewed National Contingency Plan 2023-2025. The plan, unveiled by NEMA’s Director General, Mustapha Habib Ahmed, aims to enhance the nation’s preparedness and response capabilities to various disasters and emergencies.
The Director General emphasized the importance of the plan, stating that Nigeria has witnessed numerous human and natural disasters, public health emergencies, and unforeseen events that have caused significant devastation and disruptions. He stressed the need for adequate preparedness to swiftly and efficiently respond to such situations.
Expressing gratitude towards the stakeholders involved in the plan’s review, Ahmed mentioned the diverse range of expertise and organizations united by the common goal of launching an effective National Contingency Plan. He acknowledged the dedication and collaborative efforts of experts from various sectors who drew upon past disaster experiences and incorporated the latest best practices in disaster management.
Furthermore, Ahmed extended his appreciation to UNICEF for their collaboration and support throughout the review process. He highlighted the areas covered in the plan, which included a risk analysis conducted in collaboration with UNICEF and other stakeholders. The analysis involved assessing and ranking risks across different regions in Nigeria, such as floods, epidemics, conflict, and violence, at the Local Government Areas level.
The outcome of the risk analysis guided the review of the National Contingency Plan, ensuring its alignment with identified vulnerabilities and capacities. Moving forward, NEMA will remain committed to disaster preparedness actions, including continuous risk revision across the country. The agency will also provide support to states in developing contingency plans and prioritize the implementation of Early Warning Systems to empower communities in understanding and addressing potential risks effectively.
The launch of the reviewed National Contingency Plan represents a significant milestone in Nigeria’s journey towards disaster resilience and response preparedness. With a focus on collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and risk mitigation, NEMA aims to safeguard the safety and well-being of the nation during times of crisis.
As Nigerians navigate the uncertainties brought by unpredictable events, the successful implementation of the National Contingency Plan will play a crucial role in minimizing damages, saving lives, and ensuring the swift recovery of affected communities.
