Minerals minister Anthony Mavunde urges companies to prioritize the development of local students and graduates as part of their corporate social responsibility (CSR). During a visit to Societe Generale de Surviallance (SGS), an international company engaged in measuring, inspecting, and providing control in various commercial activities, Mr. Mavunde commended SGS for offering practical work opportunities to students from the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) and the Dar es Salaam Institute of Technology (DIT).

Mr. Mavunde emphasized the significance of such initiatives in promoting knowledge and nurturing Tanzanians in their respective fields. He praised SGS for supporting the younger generation, particularly those specializing in the energy and mining sectors. The minister further commended the Association of Tanzania Employers (ATE) for its efforts in bridging the gap between educational institutions and market demands, emphasizing the importance of practical experience and understanding market needs.

SGS executive director Hany Azab shared that a total of 40 students from DIT and UDSM have benefited from the program. Azab highlighted the importance of practical involvement, enabling students to gain hands-on experience and knowledge about real-world industry practices. SGS Tanzania aims to expand and enhance its scope while actively involving students to bridge the gap between academia and industry.

The collaboration between SGS and local educational institutions underpins the government’s commitment to developing a skilled workforce in sectors such as energy and mining. By providing practical opportunities and connecting students with industries, they are equipping graduates with the necessary expertise to thrive in the job market.

The move not only benefits the students but also contributes to the overall socioeconomic development of the country. Through CSR initiatives like this, companies fulfill their obligations to society while addressing the skills gap and promoting national growth.

Emphasizing the need for collaboration between colleges, universities, and workplaces, ATE executive director Suzzane Ndomba echoed Mr. Mavunde’s sentiments. She emphasized that connecting educational institutions with industry partners is key to enhancing the learning experience and preparing students for the labor market. SGS’s practical involvement sets an encouraging example for other companies to follow.

The involvement of international companies like SGS in capacity building and knowledge transfer is vital for Tanzania’s economic growth. Such initiatives contribute not only in terms of workforce development but also in enhancing the country’s reputation as a favorable investment destination.

The minister’s visit to SGS and his endorsement of their CSR efforts highlight the government’s recognition of the critical role played by companies in nurturing local talent and fostering economic development. Encouraging more companies to follow suit, this move sets a positive precedent for collaboration between industry and academia, ultimately leading to a brighter future for Tanzanian students and graduates.

The call to develop local students’ capacity as part of CSR marks a crucial step towards building a skilled and sustainable workforce, ensuring Tanzania’s growth and competitiveness in the global marketplace.
