Welsh rugby is set to go through a significant change as a new 10-team league could launch for the 2024/25 season. The new league will bridge the gap between the semi-professional and professional game in Wales, and will be under the control of the Professional Game Board rather than the Community Game Board. Most of the clubs from Welsh Premiership will participate in this competition and will have to apply for a licence. In return, each club will receive £110,000 from the Welsh Rugby Union, and will work with one of the four regions. This new competition is expected to have a knock-on effect on the community game, particularly the Welsh Premiership which will become a 14-team league. The creation of the league has been in the making for months and is set to be given the green light in the coming weeks.
