Former South African rugby player Derick Hougaard is fighting for his life in a Pretoria hospital after reportedly not waking up for seven days. He was admitted to the intensive care unit last Saturday, suffering from respiratory pneumonia, which caused severe inflammation of his lungs. Medical reports suggest that pneumonia is inflammation and infection of the lungs or large airways caused by fungi, bacteria or viruses. Hougaard played more than 100 appearances for the Bulls between 2002 and 2008. He also played eight Tests for the Springboks, scoring 69 points. After retiring from rugby, he attempted a career in the NFL and also took part in a celebrity boxing match against South African musician Francois van Coke. At present, he is reportedly working on a documentary on his life.
