Technology is becoming so advanced that it’s hard to distinguish between deepfakes, genuine footage: Ex Dy NSA

Former Deputy National Security Advisor of India, Latha Reddy, has warned that deepfakes are reaching a level of advancement where even experts find it challenging to differentiate between manipulated videos and authentic footage. Reddy emphasized the importance of ethical boundaries when using artificial intelligence (AI) and stressed the need to consider the human consequences of technological advancements.

Speaking to ANI, Reddy stated, The technology of deepfakes is now becoming so advanced that it’s very, very hard even for an expert to distinguish between what is really a deepfake and what is the genuine footage. We must be very careful because there are ethical boundaries that must not be crossed in the use of artificial intelligence. Sometimes, in science and technology matters, we get carried away by the magic of what we can create without considering the human consequences.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also recently addressed concerns regarding fake videos created using artificial intelligence. He expressed surprise at seeing a fake video of himself performing garba, a traditional dance form, and cautioned that such deepfakes can cause turmoil and unrest in society. PM Modi stressed the urgent need for a parallel option for verification to counteract the rising threats of AI-generated deepfakes.

Discussing India’s digital stack, Reddy expressed pride in the successful implementation of digital public infrastructure, primarily through the efforts of Nandan Nilekani and his team. She expressed hope that India will continue to be at the forefront of innovation by nurturing the spirit of technology leapfrogging.

Regarding India’s role as the voice of the Global South, Reddy linked it to the country’s historical involvement in promoting international peace, justice, and equality. She emphasized the importance of including the voices of all nations, big or small, in order to achieve unity in the Global South and address their pressing needs.

Reflecting on the devastating 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, Reddy shared her experience as India’s Ambassador to Bangkok at that time. While coping with the crisis of stranded Indians in Thailand during the shutdown of the airport, she was also responding to queries about the unfolding events in Mumbai. Reddy described the day as a challenging and emotionally charged period.

Reddy emphasized India’s commitment to fighting terrorism and called for an international convention on terrorism. She expressed disappointment at the lack of consensus on the definition of terrorism, which hinders united efforts to eradicate it. Reddy emphasized the need for universal commitment to combat terrorism and prevent the actions of bad actors.

The Mumbai attacks of November 26, 2008, resulted in the loss of 166 lives, including security force personnel and foreign nationals, and left over 300 people injured.

It is evident that as technology progresses, the threat posed by deepfakes becomes increasingly potent. Experts like Latha Reddy stress the necessity of establishing ethical boundaries to prevent potential misuse of artificial intelligence. As India continues to drive innovation and promote the interests of the Global South, it is essential to navigate the challenges posed by emerging technologies while maintaining a focus on human well-being and ethical considerations.
