Former England football team manager Terry Venables dies aged 80

Former England football team manager Terry Venables has passed away at the age of 80 after battling a long illness, according to a statement from his family. Venables, who managed the national team from 1994 to 1996, will be remembered for leading England to the semi-finals of Euro 96, which took place on home soil. In addition to his time with England, Venables also had successful spells as manager of Barcelona, Tottenham, and the Australian national team.

Venables’ family released a statement saying, We are totally devastated by the loss of a wonderful husband and father who passed away peacefully yesterday after a long illness. We would ask that privacy be given at this incredibly sad time to allow us to mourn the loss of this lovely man who we were so lucky to have had in our lives.

During his managerial career, Venables achieved notable success. He won La Liga and reached the European Cup final with Barcelona, as well as winning the FA Cup with Tottenham. As a player, Venables won two caps for the England national team and made over 500 club appearances between 1960 and 1975, primarily for Chelsea, Queens Park Rangers, and Tottenham.

Fellow football icons paid tribute to Venables, highlighting his influence on and off the field. Former England captain Gary Lineker, who played under Venables at Barcelona and Tottenham, described him as the best, most innovative coach he had the privilege of working with. Alan Shearer, a member of the Euro 96 side, expressed his sadness and gratitude towards Venables, stating, You were amazing. I owe you so much.

Current England manager Gareth Southgate, who himself played under Venables, fondly remembered his former coach as a brilliant man who made people feel special. Southgate praised Venables’ tactical excellence, his ability to handle players of all backgrounds, and his contributions to England’s success during Euro 96.

Tottenham Hotspur, one of Venables’ former clubs, honored him with a minute’s applause before their Premier League match against Aston Villa. Players from both teams wore black armbands as a mark of respect. The club expressed their sadness, stating, We are extremely saddened to learn of the passing of our former player and manager.

Venables’ impact extended beyond England, with his coaching having a profound influence on Australian football as well. Ange Postecoglou, the current manager of the Australian national team, praised Venables as the best coach, manager, and tactician many have come across. Postecoglou also acknowledged Venables’ character and its positive influence both on and off the pitch.

Terry Venables’ passing will be mourned by the football world, with his legacy as a successful manager and influential figure firmly etched in the annals of the sport. His impact on coaching methods, player development, and the overall game will be remembered for years to come.
