A special Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) court in Ernakulam, India has sentenced a fake antique dealer named Monsoon Mavunkal to life imprisonment for sexually assaulting a minor girl. The court found Mavunkal guilty of harassing his domestic helper’s daughter multiple times. He was found guilty under two sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and will remain imprisoned until the end of his natural life. Mavunkal is known for allegedly swindling millions of rupees by selling fake antiquities. The Crime Branch of Kerala Police arrested him in November 2021. He pretended to be a collector selling items like a throne of Tipu Sultan, a book used by Maratha King Chhatrapati Shivaji, and others, cheating people of over Rs 10 crore. The court’s decision was welcomed by prosecutors and is seen as a deterrent against sexual abuse of minors.
