Every person should get basic know-how of first aid, CPR to save lives: President

ISLAMABAD – President Dr Arif Alvi emphasized the importance of equipping every individual with basic knowledge of first aid and CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) to effectively handle medical emergencies and save lives. Speaking at the 12th All Pakistan Camp of Pakistan Girl Guides Association (PGGA), President Alvi highlighted that emergency aid, including disaster management, first aid, and CPR, could significantly increase the survival rate in critical situations.

President Alvi underscored the need to promote the message of the emergency response plan at school and college levels, as it was an integral part of girl guiding. By possessing basic aid skills, individuals could stabilize patients in accidents, earthquakes, and other medical emergencies like cardiac arrest until professional medical assistance arrives.

The President commended the vision of the girl guides in contributing positively to society by offering timely help to others. He urged the girl guides to raise awareness about breast cancer, inclusivity for persons with disabilities, environmental protection, and physical and mental well-being among communities.

President Alvi expressed his satisfaction with the Pakistan Girl Guides Association’s efforts in character-building, but he also called for expanding the organization’s reach by increasing its current membership of 140,000 girl guides nationwide.

Recognizing women as a strong anchor within families, President Alvi emphasized that educated and healthy women not only nurture future generations but also play a vital role in the country’s progress. He encouraged girl guides to achieve financial empowerment and highlighted the opportunities presented by information technology and online businesses.

The Chief Guide of PGGA, Begum Samina Alvi, who was actively involved in championing women’s empowerment, could not attend the event due to her recent knee-replacement surgery.

Maria Maud Sabri, National Commissioner Pakistan Girl Guides Association, explained that the Girl Guide program focused on community development through practical activities centered around health, nutrition, environment, and economic empowerment. The volunteer movement, initiated in 1947 by the country’s founder Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, has branches active in four provinces, AJK, GB, and ICT.

The event was attended by 265 girl guides from all four provinces, Islamabad, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan, along with senior guides.

In conclusion, President Alvi’s address highlighted the importance of basic first aid and CPR knowledge for individuals to save lives during medical emergencies. The event served as a platform to promote awareness of various social issues and empower girl guides to contribute positively to society.
