Burntwood Rugby Club recently celebrated their 50th anniversary by securing a historic win against Stafford in the Intermediate Cup. This was the first time that Burntwood had ever beaten Stafford, and it was an incredible win that saw nine tries scored, with the crucial goals being scored in the closing stages of the game.
Under the expert guidance of Steve Harris, Burntwood started the game brilliantly and were soon ahead, with Luke Rookyard scoring the opening goal within five minutes of the start. Jack Johnson then added a second goal for Burntwood, with Brett Taylor converting to give the team a comfortable lead of 12-0.
However, Stafford responded quickly and levelled the score with tries from Sam Langley and Alex Rock, converted by Dan Mills. They soon took the lead with a goal from Jerry Qasenivalu and another conversion from Mills, giving them a 19-12 lead in the game.
Despite Stafford’s lead, Burntwood came back strong, with Rookyard scoring two more goals to complete his hat-trick. But an unfortunate moment from Burntwood captain Josh Cannings gave away a penalty to Stafford, allowing them to equalize the score at 22-22 just before halftime.
The second half of the game saw both teams playing in even more challenging weather conditions. However, Burntwood managed to take the lead once again, scoring through winger Sion Edwards. But Stafford once again managed to level the score, thanks to a goal from Mills.
As the game approached extra-time, it was Burntwood who managed to score the crucial goals that sealed their victory. Brett Taylor scored two penalties, earning Burntwood a famous 28-22 win over Stafford.
Overall, it was an incredible game of rugby that was enjoyed by both teams and the spectators. Burntwood’s victory was particularly special, as it was a historic moment for the club on their 50th anniversary. The win is sure to be remembered for years to come and will hopefully inspire Burntwood to more successes in the years ahead.
