If Democrats Ran Red States Fewer People Would Die

A new study published in the respected PLOS One journal reveals a startling conclusion: if Democrats had governed red states in the United States, there would have been significantly fewer deaths. The study, funded by the National Institute on Aging (NIA), delves into the impact of political policies on average lifespan and mortality rates.

According to the study, the average lifespan in the United States lags behind that of many other countries. While citizens in Japan can expect to live to 85 years old and those in South Korea, Norway, Switzerland, Iceland, Israel, and Australia have an average lifespan of 83 years, the United States falls behind at a mere 77 years alongside Iran, Tunisia, and Morocco.

Attributing this disparity to Republican policies, the researchers estimate that if Democrats had run all the red states in 2019, 171,030 fewer Americans would have died that year. On the other hand, if conservatives had implemented their healthcare, tax, labor, and gun policies in blue states, an additional 217,635 deaths would have occurred.

The study’s findings are reminiscent of previous research conducted in Australia and England in 2002. In a paper titled Mortality and Political Climate: How Suicide Rates have Risen During Periods of Conservative Government, 1901-2000, researchers observed a link between conservative governments and increased suicide rates. The study controlled for factors such as war and drought and revealed that more people took their own lives during conservative rule.

The data highlights an excess death rate of approximately 17% among the 238,431 suicides during conservative governments, leading experts to estimate that roughly 35,000 individuals would still be alive had conservative governments not been in power. The alarming findings imply that conservative policies may influence people’s well-being and desire to live.

As discussions around policy priorities and their impact on public health persist, these studies shed light on the potential consequences of contrasting political approaches. The implications extend beyond the borders of the United States, urging policymakers and citizens worldwide to consider the potential effects their choices may have on public health and longevity.

While the connection between political ideology and mortality rates may spark further debates, it is crucial to acknowledge the importance of evidence-based policy decisions that prioritize the well-being of citizens. The study’s findings provide valuable insights into the potential impact of political choices on the lives of individuals and underscores the need for ongoing research and analysis in this field.

As we navigate the complex landscape of public health policy, it is vital to make informed decisions that prioritize the health and longevity of all citizens. By understanding the potential consequences of political choices, we can work towards creating a future where individuals live longer, healthier lives, regardless of political affiliation.

The study serves as a reminder that political decisions have tangible outcomes on public health, urging policymakers to carefully consider the potential impact of their policies. The findings emphasize the importance of evidence-based policymaking and collaborative efforts to improve the well-being of citizens around the globe.

In this quest for healthier and longer lives, it is essential for policymakers, citizens, and researchers to collaborate and ensure that policies prioritize the well-being of all individuals. By working together, we can create a future where longer lifespans and better health become a reality for all.
