LAKE LUZERNE, N.Y. – A night at the Rockwell Falls Public Library in Lake Luzerne took an unexpected turn on Tuesday when violence erupted following a heated meeting. Tensions have been escalating over the prolonged closure of the library, which has left many residents frustrated and concerned.
The Rockwell Falls Public Library shut its doors abruptly in late September after two-thirds of its staff resigned, including the Director who cited harassment and a hostile work environment. Since then, the library has faced further turmoil with more resignations, including members of the Board of Trustees. Currently, only two members remain on the Board, causing a lack of quorum and hindering the essential work required to reopen the library.
During Tuesday’s meeting, residents expressed their frustrations and placed blame on trustee Josh Jacquard for the prolonged closure of the library. The community members voiced their concerns, emphasizing the impact this ongoing dispute has had on their access to educational resources and community services.
The fighting back and forth has cost everyone access to something that we have always accepted as part of this town, said one individual.
The Southern Adirondack Library System (SALS) has stepped in to address the crisis, as the responsibility to recruit new school district public library trustees now falls upon them. SALS is collaborating with the New York State Education Department to identify potential trustees who can help resolve the issue. A meeting has been scheduled for December and January to discuss the recruitment process and the future of the library.
The Rockwell Falls Public Library has been embroiled in controversy earlier this year, starting with debates surrounding the drag queen story hour. In addition to this, there have been ongoing harassment claims made by library leaders, further complicating the situation. However, despite the turmoil, community members are eagerly awaiting the library’s reopening.
The library serves as a vital resource, providing education, community engagement, and a safe space for residents of Lake Luzerne. It is hoped that a resolution will be reached soon, allowing the library to resume its crucial services.
While some residents expressed their disappointment and concerns over the library’s closure, trustee Josh Jacquard and Jason Hall declined to comment on the matter.
In the meantime, efforts are underway to recruit new trustees who can help restore the Rockwell Falls Public Library to its rightful place within the community. It is a turbulent time for this once-thriving institution, but the hope remains that through collaboration and dedication, the library will once again be able to welcome residents through its doors.
As the community eagerly awaits the reopening of the library, it serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving and supporting these valuable community spaces. The Rockwell Falls Public Library has become a symbol of resilience and the determination to overcome challenges, highlighting the essential role libraries play in fostering knowledge, connection, and growth within a community.
The Southern Adirondack Library System and the New York State Education Department are committed to working together to find a resolution and ensure that Lake Luzerne residents regain access to their beloved library as soon as possible. In the face of adversity, the strength and resilience of the community shine through, demonstrating the power of unity in overcoming obstacles.
