Former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has been hit with a new lawsuit by his former aide Brittany Commisso, who alleges that Cuomo sexually harassed her during his time in office. The lawsuit was filed in state Supreme Court in Albany, just before the one-year expiration for lawsuits under the Adult Survivors Act, a special law that extended the time limits for sexual abuse claims.

Commisso is one of 11 women who came forward with accusations of sexual misconduct against Cuomo, leading to his resignation in 2021 amid the #MeToo movement. In her lawsuit, she claims that she experienced sexual harassment and unwanted touching from the former governor, and that she faced punishment after reporting the incidents. The case seeks monetary damages.

An earlier criminal charge was brought against Cuomo based on Commisso’s allegations but was eventually dismissed due to the inability to prove the case. Cuomo’s attorney, Rita M. Glavin, vehemently denied the claims, stating that Commisso’s allegations are provably false and that her lawsuit is a transparent attempt at a cash grab.

The Adult Survivors Act has given rise to a wave of lawsuits against public figures accused of sexual misconduct, with numerous cases being filed in the final weeks before the law’s expiration. Notable individuals such as former President Donald Trump, hip hop mogul Sean Diddy Combs, and comedian and actor Russell Brand have also faced legal action as a result of the law.

As a leading news agency, we have chosen to respect Commisso’s decision to come forward publicly with her allegation of sexual harassment by including her name in this report. However, it is our usual policy to protect the identities of individuals who say they have been sexually assaulted.

This lawsuit against Cuomo has reignited discussions surrounding the importance of addressing allegations of sexual harassment and abuse in the political sphere. Cuomo’s fall from grace, once seen as a potential presidential candidate, serves as a stark reminder of the need for accountability and transparency in public office. The outcome of this case will undoubtedly impact the ongoing conversation surrounding sexual misconduct and the pursuit of justice for survivors.

As this story continues to develop, we will keep you informed with the latest updates and any significant legal proceedings.
