Former Springbok rugby player Derick Hougaard has reportedly been in intensive care for the past week due to severe inflammation of his lungs, according to a recent Netwerk24 report. The star player, aged 40, is said to have experienced feelings of nausea on Friday 9 June before becoming unconscious later that evening, and has not regained consciousness since. Hougaard played over 110 games for the Bulls during his career between 2002 and 2008, contributing to their success in winning the 2007 Super 14 title. He also played for Leicester Tigers and Saracens in England, and had eight appearances for the Springboks, including during the 2003 Rugby World Cup and his last game against the All Blacks in 2007. Following his rugby career, Hougaard attempted a career in the NFL and also took part in a celebrity boxing match against popular South African musician Francois van Coke. Hougaard remains in intensive care at present, and friends, fans and colleagues have extended their thoughts and wishes to him as he continues to fight his illness.
