Volunteer Centre Celebrates 50th Year of Service, Seeks More Drivers

The Abingdon and District Volunteer Centre (ADVC) commemorated its 50th anniversary of dedicated service to the community. For five decades, this non-profit organization has been providing vital transportation assistance to elderly and frail individuals in Abingdon and the surrounding areas.

Offering a much-needed lifeline, the ADVC ensures that their clients can attend crucial appointments at hospitals, medical surgeries, dental centers, and even visit local shops. Notably, the center’s transport services are available at a lower cost compared to traditional taxi services, making it accessible for those in need.

In honor of this significant milestone, Mayor of Abingdon Gwyneth Lewis joined the dedicated volunteers for an unforgettable celebratory meal. Expressing her gratitude, Mayor Lewis acknowledged the remarkable service provided by the center. It was a poignant moment as the celebration fell on the exact day 50 years ago when the center received its very first call for assistance in 1973.

Looking ahead, the Volunteer Centre is appealing for additional volunteer drivers to ensure the continuation of their invaluable work. The ADVC is calling upon compassionate individuals who can contribute their time and support to help those in need. A spokesperson for ADVC emphasized, If you feel you could help, please contact us via our office on 01235 522438 on weekdays from 10 am to 12.30 pm or view our Facebook page, Abingdon Volunteer Drivers. You can offer as many hours as you wish, and expenses will be paid.

With a spirit of community, the Volunteer Centre epitomizes the power of collective goodwill. Their dedication to providing transport services for elderly and frail individuals has made a significant impact over the past five decades. As they mark their anniversary, the ADVC continues their mission of ensuring that no one is left without access to vital appointments and services. Their plea for more volunteer drivers presents an opportunity for individuals to make a tangible difference in the lives of those in need.
