Wiley Roots Announces Four New Imperial Stouts for Black Friday
GREELEY, Colo. — After a long-awaited return, Wiley Roots Brewing Company is bringing back midnight on the Run, their beloved 10% ABV Imperial Stout, just in time for Black Friday. Alongside the original flavor, the brewery is also introducing two new variations and a special single barrel aged release.
Midnight on the Run, a decadent dark chocolate Imperial Stout, is named after the brewery’s very own black cat, Midnight. In 2016, co-founders Kyle and Miranda Carbaugh adopted Midnight when the feral stray cat appeared at their family ranch in Greeley. Since then, Midnight has become a cherished mascot among the brewery’s fans. The first batch of Midnight on the Run was released in 2018 to an eagerly waiting line of admirers.
This year, on Friday, November 24, 2023, at 12 pm, Wiley Roots will be offering four variants of Midnight on the Run from their taproom, both for on-site consumption and to-go. In addition to the original chocolate Imperial Stout, they will be featuring Cinnamon Midnight on the Run, Hazelnut Midnight on the Run, and Rye Whiskey Barrel Aged Midnight on the Run. The barrel-aged version spent an impressive 24 months aging in a single Laws Secale Rye barrel.
Kyle Carbaugh, Co-Founder and Head Brewer, explained the effort put into perfecting the recipes for this year’s release. We completely rebuilt the recipe to enhance the dark chocolate flavors and minimize the roasted barley characteristics. We extended the boil to 30 hours, resulting in a 60% reduction in volume, which gives the beer a thicker base with an even more pronounced dark chocolate flavor. But despite its richness, it remains incredibly enjoyable and not overly decadent or heavy. The cinnamon and hazelnut variants showcase the best ingredients we could find, elevating the taste experience, he said.
However, it is the rye barrel-aged version that truly excites Carbaugh. After aging for over two years in a single rye barrel from Laws Whiskey House in Denver, Colorado, he believes it will pleasantly surprise beer connoisseurs. I’m extremely proud of our team and what we’ve achieved with this release. We’ve come a long way. When we won ‘Best 20 Beers’ by Craft Beer & Brewing last year for our barrel-aged stout, I knew we were on the right track.
Wiley Roots Brewing Company will have Midnight on the Run available in their taproom, but they anticipate the barrel-aged version to sell out quickly, as it will not be distributed. All four variants will be ready for purchase starting at 12 pm on Black Friday.
