Sachin’s Daughter Sara Tendulkar Calls for Action Against Deepfakes, Citing Misuse of Technology
New Delhi, November 22 – Sara Tendulkar, the daughter of legendary Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, has spoken out against deepfake technology after becoming a victim herself. She condemned certain ‘parody’ accounts on social media for creating and spreading deepfake photos that she described as far from reality. Sara’s comments come in the wake of a deepfake video of Bollywood actor Rashmika Mandana that caused a significant social media uproar.
In a lengthy post on her Instagram stories, Sara expressed her concerns about impersonation accounts on social media and called for action. She acknowledged the positive aspects of social media as a platform for sharing joys and sorrows but highlighted how technology is being misused, leading to the loss of truth and authenticity on the internet.
S social media is a wonderful space for all of us to share our joys, sorrows, and daily activities. However, it is disconcerting to see the misuse of technology as it takes away from the truth and authenticity of the internet. I have come across some deepfake photos of me which are far from reality, she wrote.
A few accounts on X (formerly Twitter) have obviously been created with an intent to impersonate me and mislead people. I do not have an account on X, and I hope X looks into such accounts and suspends them, she added, urging the platform to take action.
Sara concluded her statement by emphasizing the importance of truth and encouraging trust and reality-based communication. She stated, Entertainment should never come at the expense of the truth. Let’s encourage communication that’s based on trust and reality.
Deepfakes, a form of manipulated media, are becoming alarmingly common. These AI-generated synthetic images and videos can be used to make people appear to say or do things they never did, raising concerns about the potential for misinformation and the erosion of trust in online content.
The rise of deepfake technology has prompted calls for stricter measures to curb its misuse. Many argue that legal frameworks need to be established to address this growing threat to both individuals’ privacy and the integrity of online information.
Sara Tendulkar’s experience is a stark reminder of the dangers posed by deepfakes. Her call for action highlights the urgent need to come up with effective measures to combat their spread and protect individuals from the potential harm caused by this form of technology. As the world becomes increasingly connected online, it is essential to safeguard the truth and authenticity of digital platforms.
In response to Sara’s plea, it is hoped that social media platforms and authorities will take concrete steps to address the issue of deepfakes and ensure responsible use of technology, thereby preserving the integrity of online spaces.
The incident involving Sara Tendulkar serves as a wake-up call, prompting individuals, policymakers, and technology companies to combat the misuse of deepfakes and ensure the internet remains a trustworthy space.
