UAE Launches Groundbreaking AI Language Model ‘Jais Climate’ for Climate Intelligence

ABU DHABI – In a groundbreaking development, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has unveiled Jais Climate, the world’s first bilingual large language model (LLM) dedicated to climate intelligence. Developed in collaboration between the Mohamed Bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) and Core42, an Abu Dhabi-based technology holding company, Jais Climate aims to provide valuable insights on climate-related issues ahead of the much-anticipated Cop28 conference in Dubai.

Jais Climate, which focuses on climate, sustainability, and Cop28, boasts an impressive collection of 1.4 million climate-related instructions. This vast database was derived from ClimaInstruct, the most extensive instruction-based bilingual data set on climate and sustainability topics, as revealed by MBZUAI and Core42.

LLMs have revolutionized the field of artificial intelligence, enabling machines to generate quality content by training on massive amounts of data. This cutting-edge technology has significantly expedited information retrieval and automated various tasks that previously required substantial time and effort.

Aimed at enhancing our understanding of climate-related matters for Cop28 participants and beyond, Jais Climate offers users the ability to quickly access vital climate information. Andrew Jackson, Core42’s Executive Vice President and Chief AI Officer, expressed his satisfaction with Jais Climate, as even his children have had a positive experience using it for related school work. Jackson stated, They were able to ask climate questions quickly and get answers back, they truly had a great experience.

While prior criticisms of LLMs centered around the languages they were based on, Jais Climate effectively addresses this issue by incorporating Arabic into its bilingual model. The launch of Jais, an open-source bilingual Arabic-English model, previously hailed as one of the most accurate Arabic LLMs, paved the way for Jais Climate’s successful development.

By utilizing sources and climate-related information in both English and Arabic, Jais Climate democratizes climate data, making it readily accessible to the more than 274 million Arabic speakers and 1.4 billion English speakers globally, according to MBZUAI and Core42.

Named after Jais, the UAE’s highest peak in Ras Al Khaimah, both LLMs serve as a gift to the local and global community. Timothy Baldwin, the Associate Provost for Academic Affairs and Professor of Natural Language Processing at MBZUAI, emphasized this during the introduction of Jais Climate, stating, It’s a gift to the community, both local and the world.

As Cop28 unfolds, Jais Climate will continue to be updated with new information, documents, and developments. The model will play a crucial role in fact-checking and debunking potential misconceptions about climate-related topics, while also encouraging insights and feedback for future models and iterations, as shared by Mr. Baldwin.

Eric Xing, President of MBZUAI, underscored the significance of providing a climate-focused LLM, stating, We’re empowering millions of people to enhance their understanding of these complex issues. He further emphasized the role of advanced technology and scientific research in shaping sustainable solutions for the future, especially as the UAE hosts the Cop28 conference.

With its groundbreaking capabilities and focus on climate intelligence, Jais Climate represents a significant leap forward in AI development. As the world watches with anticipation, this remarkable achievement from the UAE is set to make a profound impact on addressing climate change and fostering a sustainable future for all.
