HIV/AIDS has reached a significant turning point in Nigeria, transitioning from an epidemic to an endemic status, according to the National Coordinator of the National HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, and STI Control Programme, Adebobola Bashorun. This shift is attributed to the successful containment of the disease’s spread and the reduction of stigmatization against those testing positive.

During a recent press briefing in Abuja, Bashorun emphasized the crucial role of accessible treatment in driving down the prevalence of HIV/AIDS in the country. He explained that the disease has now entered the endemic stage, signifying effective control measures and decreased stigma towards those affected.

Bashorun compared the different stages of disease events, labeling HIV/AIDS as endemic, much like Malaria, which is ever-present in Nigeria. He explained that when HIV first emerged, it was classified as an epidemic, and eventually escalated to a global pandemic. But now, through the implementation of effective prevention strategies and the development of treatment options, Nigeria has successfully brought the disease under control.

Encouraging Nigerians to prioritize regular HIV/AIDS testing, Bashorun emphasized that there are now several available treatments to manage the disease. By knowing their HIV status, individuals can access the necessary care and support. He stressed that the presence of treatment options has played a significant role in reducing the fear and stigma associated with the disease.

In conjunction with this announcement, a three-day National Training of Trainers on WHO-approved Standard Q HIV 1&2 Rapid Test Kit was unveiled. The purpose of this training is to ensure the proper usage of the test kits, monitor performance, and evaluate their effectiveness in the field.

Bashorun revealed that after the Training of Trainers, over 900 additional testers would be trained across the country’s 774 Local Government Areas (LGAs) through regional training in all six geopolitical zones. This comprehensive training initiative will commence on Thursday, November 23, 2023, in Abuja, further expanding the reach of HIV/AIDS testing and ensuring accurate and efficient screening nationwide.
