The banned United States-based Sikh outfit, Sikhs For Justice (SFJ), and its founder Gurpatwant Singh Pannun have been booked by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) over a video clip threatening Air India with a global blockade. Pannun, who was designated as an individual terrorist by the Ministry of Home Affairs, released video messages urging members of the Sikh community not to fly with Air India from November 19 onwards, claiming their lives would be in danger. The NIA has invoked provisions of the Indian Penal Code and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act against SFJ and Pannun.

The threats issued by Pannun have prompted security forces in Canada, India, and other countries where Air India operates to sound a high alert and initiate investigations. The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security has also taken the threat seriously, ordering enhanced security measures at Delhi and Punjab airports, including secondary ladder point checks for Air India passengers.

The NIA alleges that Pannun has been creating a false narrative to promote terror acts in India, particularly in Punjab, by inciting enmity between the Sikh community and other groups. This recent threat is consistent with his past attempts to disrupt transportation networks and essential infrastructure in the country.

Pannun, who is facing numerous criminal cases, gained attention for calling for pro-Khalistan referendums in different countries and has been involved in incidents related to pro-Khalistan slogans and posters appearing in various parts of Punjab. The NIA had previously registered a case against him and confiscated his properties.

The booking of SFJ and Pannun by the NIA showcases the agency’s dedication to counter-terrorism efforts. By invoking various legal provisions, the agency aims to hold them accountable for their actions and prevent any potential disruption to Air India’s operations. The global blockade threat has triggered significant security measures, reflecting the seriousness with which authorities are taking the situation.

The video messages and ongoing investigations highlight the need for continued vigilance against individuals and groups promoting violence and unrest. The NIA’s actions demonstrate its commitment to maintaining peace and security within the country. Moving forward, it will be crucial to monitor developments and prevent any potential threats from materializing.
