Chinese Warship’s Dangerous and Unprofessional Actions Raise Concerns Over Australia-China Ties

Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has criticized the actions of a Chinese warship, stating that it acted in a dangerous and unprofessional manner during an incident that led to an injury to a military diver. This incident has the potential to damage the relationship between Australia and China, according to Albanese. The incident took place on November 14 when HMAS Toowoomba, an Australian navy vessel, was carrying out a diving operation in Japan’s Exclusive Economic Zone to clear fishing nets from its propellers.

Albanese, who recently met with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum, revealed that the incident caused harm to one person and highlighted the necessity for improved communication between the militaries of both countries. In an interview with Sky News Australia, he affirmed that the actions of the Chinese warship were unsafe and unprofessional.

While the incident has been raised through the appropriate channels, it remains unclear whether Albanese discussed the matter with President Xi during their private meeting at APEC. Albanese did emphasize that events like this have negative consequences and strain the relationship between nations, sending a clear message to China.

According to Defense Minister Richard Marles, a People’s Liberation Army Navy destroyer closed in on HMAS Toowoomba despite receiving prior notification of the diving operation. The Chinese warship also operated its hull-mounted sonar in a manner that posed a safety risk. Medical assessments suggest that the minor injuries sustained by divers were likely caused by the destroyer’s sonar.

This incident comes at a crucial time as Albanese recently visited China, becoming the first Australian leader to do so in seven years. During the visit, both countries agreed to restart an annual leaders dialogue, signaling a potential thaw in relations. However, the latest incident puts a strain on these efforts and emphasizes the importance of open communication and respect between nations.

The Chinese embassy in Australia has not yet responded to requests for comment on the incident. It remains to be seen how this incident will impact the ongoing relationship between China and Australia.
