Mother Found Dead, 10-Year-Old Boy Missing: Father Suspected in Homicide and Abduction
The search continues for a missing 10-year-old boy who was last seen in Wilmer, located 16 miles south of Dallas. Tragically, his mother was found dead shortly after his disappearance, and authorities suspect that his father may be involved in both the murder and abduction.
The victim, identified as 48-year-old Zuleika Arzate-Lopez, was discovered deceased at the same location where her son, Ian Aguilar, was last seen. The Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office has confirmed that her cause of death was a homicide.
Ian was reported missing from the 20 block of Oakdale Street in Wilmer. The community held a vigil to honor Arzate-Lopez and Ian, where Zuri Lopez, Arzate-Lopez’s daughter and Ian’s sister, spoke emotionally about their last interaction. She revealed that everything seemed normal when she spoke to her mother on Monday night, as Ian was preparing for bed and watching a movie. Their last exchange consisted of expressing their love for each other.
Authorities have identified the boy’s father, 38-year-old Juan Aguilar-Cano, as the suspect in Arzate-Lopez’s murder and Ian’s abduction. Initially, law enforcement officials issued an Amber Alert, stating that Ian was in grave and immediate danger. However, Wilmer Police Chief Victor Kemp announced that investigators now believe Ian may be with a family member in Mexico, rather than in the custody of his father. However, the investigation will continue until they can confirm that Ian is not in danger.
In an update to the Amber Alert, it was noted that Aguilar-Cano was last seen in Houston. The vehicle associated with the abduction was located and determined to no longer be connected to the case. It was abandoned at a bus station that frequently services trips to Mexico.
Zuri Lopez expressed concern that her father may be attempting to take Ian to Mexico, as he has ties and connections there. She also described her mother’s relationship with the suspect as toxic.
The City of Dallas, where Arzate-Lopez was employed, extended their condolences. They described her as a beloved member of the Development Services family and expressed their deep sadness at her passing. They are praying for Ian’s safe return.
A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to assist Arzate-Lopez’s family in her absence and to cover funeral expenses.
Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact Wilmer police at 972-441-6565.
