Indian Nationals Sentenced to Death in Qatar File Appeal, India Assures Legal Support
Eight Indian nationals who were sentenced to death in Qatar have filed an appeal against the court’s ruling. India has vowed to provide legal support and explore all available options in this case, which has been deemed as deeply shocking. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) expressed its high importance in this matter and stated that it is engaging with Qatari authorities, offering both legal and consular assistance.
The charges against these individuals, who were former Navy officers and worked with the private company Al Dahra, were not made public by either the Qatari authorities or New Delhi. However, it is known that they were arrested in August last year on charges of espionage. Former military officials have attested to their unblemished careers and the important positions they held during their stints in the Indian Navy, including that of instructors.
Qatar’s Court of First Instance handed down the death sentences to the Indian nationals on October 26. Subsequently, an appeal has been filed in Qatar’s Court of Appeal, and the case is currently in the legal process. The Qatari side has maintained confidentiality regarding the judgment in the entire process. However, Indian officials remain hopeful for a positive outcome in the appeal process.
It is important to urge caution and avoid engaging in speculation due to the sensitive nature of the case, as emphasized by the MEA spokesperson, Arindam Bagchi. Bagchi also clarified that reports suggesting the appeal has been adjudicated are factually incorrect. The Indian government continues to work closely with the Qatari authorities to provide necessary support to the eight individuals involved.
Al Dahra Global closed its operations in Doha in May, leading to the return of all its employees, primarily Indians, to their home country. The former naval personnel’s case has been raised by the Indian Navy with the government, seeking their release.
As the appeal process unfolds, both India and Qatar hope for a positive resolution. The Indian government remains committed to extending all possible legal and consular assistance to its citizens. The case highlights the significance of diplomatic engagement between the two countries and the importance of a fair and just legal process.
In conclusion, the appeal filed by the eight Indian nationals sentenced to death in Qatar has initiated a new legal process that India is actively following. The Ministry of External Affairs is committed to providing support and exploring all available options to ensure a just resolution in this deeply shocking case.
