A Bangladeshi man has been sentenced to three years in prison and fined Dh100,000 by a Dubai court for his involvement in an international drug trafficking operation. The man was identified as a key link within the network and was arrested in February.
The investigation began after authorities received a tip-off about drug sales in the UAE facilitated through a WhatsApp account associated with an international phone number. Dubai Police traced the flow of money to a bank account belonging to the accused, which had been opened in November. The account received a total of Dh430,000 through 814 deposits ranging from Dh20 to Dh5,500.
To launder the funds, the money was distributed among six different bank accounts through 72 separate transfers. Some of the cash was even withdrawn from ATMs outside the UAE. During the investigation, it was also discovered that the defendant had fraudulently opened a bank account using a forged salary certificate.
As a result of this case, 604 individuals who had made deposits into the account were apprehended. These individuals were found to have a history of drug abuse, and blood tests confirmed the presence of drugs in their systems.
Despite the defendant’s claims of ignorance regarding the illegal nature of the transactions, the Dubai Criminal Court found him guilty of drug-related charges and facilitating money exchange resulting from drug dealing. In addition, his use of forgery to obtain a bank account led to an extra month being added to his sentence.
