Google Expands AI Chatbot Bard to Multiple Languages, Including Japanese and Korean

Google is opening up its AI-powered chatbot, Bard, to English speakers in many parts of the world. The company announced the move at its Google I/O developer conference, following Microsoft’s decision to remove the waitlist for its own chatbot, Bing. Bard, which has been in limited testing for the past two months, is now available to people in 180 English-speaking countries and territories. In addition to English, Google has also added Japanese and Korean chat abilities, with plans to expand to a total of 40 languages.

Chatbots have become increasingly useful due to advancements in artificial intelligence technology, such as large language models and generative AI. These technologies enable chatbots to analyze vast amounts of text and generate human-like responses to text prompts. Chatbots have shown various skills including writing poetry, answering philosophical questions, and providing tax advice.

However, there are concerns about chatbots generating inaccurate or misleading information, as well as potential issues related to abuse, misinformation, hacking, and sexual harassment. Google is working to address these concerns by taking a bold and responsible approach with Bard, aiming to balance progress with caution.

To enhance transparency and verify information, Google plans to improve the way Bard cites its sources, including showing specific blocks of code and relevant licensing information. The company is also working on enabling Bard to handle images and integrating it with Google apps and third-party apps.

As the competition in the chatbot space heats up, Google is catching up with rivals like OpenAI and Microsoft. With the expansion of Bard to multiple languages and the company’s commitment to responsible AI development, it aims to provide a valuable and trustworthy conversational AI experience.

Overall, Google’s move to open up Bard to more users and languages reflects the growing demand and potential for AI-powered chatbots. As these technologies continue to advance, they have the potential to revolutionize the way we interact with computers and access information, while also raising important ethical considerations. As Google expands Bard and other companies continue to develop similar chatbot solutions, it will be crucial to find the right balance between innovation and responsibility in AI development.
