New Indonesian Regulation Targets Child Violence, Urges Stronger Parenting Role
Indonesia has introduced a new regulation aimed at addressing the issue of child violence and promoting the importance of stronger parenting. The regulation, Ministerial Regulation No. 46/2023, has been designed to redefine child violence and enhance the roles of task forces at the local level, making them more structured.
The Inspector General of the Ministry, Chatarina Muliana, stressed that parents and their parenting role play a crucial part in preventing violence against children. She acknowledged the challenges faced by parents today, including high divorce rates, economic burdens, and low levels of parental education. As a result, parenting has become a significant job that requires attention and dedication.
To tackle the issue effectively, the new regulation emphasizes the need for parents to serve as good role models, exhibit positive behavior, and provide character education from an early age. Parents, being products of the past, have an influential role in shaping a child’s character, according to Chatarina.
The regulation also establishes Prevention and Handling of Violence teams in Educational Units (PPKSP) and provides Technical Guidance (Bimtek) training to ensure a more effective implementation of preventive measures. This holistic approach aims to address the problem of child violence comprehensively.
Child violence in Indonesia is described as the tip of the iceberg, with a large number of cases still unreported. Factors such as poverty, social inequality, and inadequate parenting contribute significantly to the issue, and the Covid-19 pandemic has only exacerbated the problem.
Ai Maryati Solihah, Chairperson of the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI), emphasized the need for collaborative efforts to tackle this issue. A survey conducted by KPAI revealed that only approximately 23% of parents have received parenting education, indicating a significant gap in preparedness.
In conclusion, the new Indonesian regulation targeting child violence aims to redefine the concept of violence against children and strengthen the role of parents in mitigating this issue. With proper character education and positive behavior modeling, parents can positively shape their child’s character. Collaborative efforts and effective complaint channels are crucial in addressing the problem comprehensively. By prioritizing parenting education and implementing preventive measures, Indonesia aims to create a safer environment for its children.
