Galloway Cricket Club’s first team has secured an impressive win against newcomers Mearns CC in a Western Prem 3 match. The match was held at Hamilton Palace Sports Grounds, with both teams struggling at the bottom of the ladder. The scorching weather on the day meant a reduced overs match of 35 per side, something which benefited the home team due to logistical issues. However, stand-in skipper Phil McMenemy won the toss and asked the home side to bat first, on a worn artificial strip.
Despite missing several key players, Galloway’s bowling and tight outfielding restricted Mearns to just 181 all out, with only three players contributing significant runs. Galloway had Mearns at 110 for eight, but the ninth wicket added nearly 70 runs. The Galloway team conceded 29 wide balls, handing the opponents 40 extra overs.
After the tea break, Galloway’s innings commenced with the dependable Carr and Ajith Vu opening, but both were dismissed quickly. The partnership-of-the-day was between Carr and Akhil Sudhi, both of whom batted well and took the score above 60 before Carr was dismissed for 23. Akhil Sudhi’s exceptional innings meant Galloway won the game by four wickets. He finished on 109 not out, hitting 10 sixes and eight fours, with 84 of his runs coming from boundaries.
This was a morale-boosting victory away from home against a welcoming club on a hot day. Plaudits go to Akhil Sudhi, who proved to be a match-winner for the Galloway team. Galloway’s next game is away to East Kilbride on June 17, and they are hoping to build on this impressive victory.
