UMass Men’s Club Hockey Team Grabs Gritty Victory Over Florida Gulf Coast, Extends Winning Streak

The UMass men’s club hockey team secured a hard-fought win against Florida Gulf Coast University, further extending their winning streak. In game two of the three-game weekend series, the Minutemen emerged triumphant with a score of 4-3. Despite facing a formidable opponent in Florida Gulf Coast, UMass showcased their determination and grit throughout the game.

The game-changing moment came when Sean Brown scored the decisive goal with just over seven minutes remaining in the second period. With an aggressive forecheck, UMass managed to push the puck behind the Eagles’ net, creating an opportunity for Brown. He wasted no time in firing a shot over the goaltender’s blocker, bolstering UMass’ lead to 4-1.

Head coach Mike DeFazio acknowledged the exceptional skills of Florida Gulf Coast and emphasized the importance of UMass demonstrating tenacity and diligent forechecking to overcome their opponents. The Minutemen’s first goal showcased their relentless pressure as Nick Salvatore intercepted a defenseman, maneuvered around the goaltender, and smoothly tucked the puck under his pad, giving UMass an early 1-0 lead in the first period.

Although UMass never relinquished their lead, they had to weather numerous scoring chances from FGCU throughout the game. During the second period, shortly after the Eagles closed the gap to 2-1, they had a powerplay opportunity and were cycling the puck around. A failed clearance from UMass led to a dangerous situation in front of the net, but Minutemen goaltender Trey Peterson made a remarkable save, pushing the puck over the crossbar and denying the equalizer.

Peterson’s heroics were instrumental in preserving the victory for UMass, as he turned away an impressive 45 shots on goal. Coach DeFazio praised Peterson’s exceptional performance, acknowledging that he could have allowed more goals given the numerous scoring chances for FGCU. Peterson’s brilliant performance played a vital role in the Minutemen’s triumph.

One of Florida Gulf Coast’s goals was a result of an impressive individual effort by Spence Van Tiem late in the second period. Van Tiem received a breakout pass deep in his own zone, evaded UMass defenders with skilled stickwork, and then dropped the puck in front of the net for Jake Court to tap it in. This brought the score to 4-2 at the time. In the final moments of the game, Wyatt Engelmann fired a powerful one-timer, narrowing the gap to 4-3 with less than a minute remaining. Florida Gulf Coast pinned UMass in their own zone, creating a frantic scramble, but the Minutemen managed to hold on to their lead and secure the victory.

Coach DeFazio acknowledged that although UMass started the game strongly, Florida Gulf Coast put up a fierce fight. However, the early advantage built by UMass proved crucial in withstanding the late surge from their opponents. The game remained intense until the very end, but UMass emerged as the victors.

UMass’ cushion in the second period was established when Dominic Boccelli scored his second goal of the weekend. Two minutes into the period, Boccelli settled a bouncing puck and unleashed a powerful shot, beating the goaltender glove side and extending UMass’ lead to 2-0.

The Minutemen’s win against Florida Gulf Coast University showcases their determination, resilience, and ability to triumph over strong opponents. With their winning streak now at four games, UMass is undoubtedly gaining momentum and growing in confidence as they continue to navigate their season.
