In a bid to improve citizen services and bring about decentralization, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has launched a new ward office system. The system aims to address public complaints about civic services at the ward level, with each of the 150 wards having a dedicated office led by an Assistant Municipal Commissioner and a team of 10 officials.
The ward offices will be responsible for overseeing various departments, including road maintenance, sanitation, entomology, town planning, electricity, and water supply. This ensures that issues related to these departments are monitored and addressed efficiently at the ward level. The system will also see the addition of officers from departments such as health and police in the future, ensuring comprehensive service delivery.
Launching the system, Municipal Administration Minister K. Taraka Rama Rao stressed the importance of the ward office system, emphasizing the positive impact it would have on the citizens and governance. He acknowledged the existing dearth of bureaucracy at the ward level and underscored how the ward office system would bridge this gap and enhance local governance.
This system has been introduced with the genuine intention of providing good governance to the citizens of Hyderabad, said the Minister. He called upon all public representatives to rise above political affiliations to work together for the success of this system while assuring them of the government’s full support.
The ward office system has the potential to serve as a model for other cities across the country if its effectiveness proves consistent. It could revolutionize governance and service delivery in India, further strengthening Hyderabad’s reputation for good governance.
