Rogue Trader Convicted of Defrauding Elderly Woman’s Life Savings

A trader in the UK has pleaded guilty to defrauding an elderly woman of her life savings in a roofing scam. Mervyn Rhys Richards, 43, was charged with misleading the homeowner in Watchet, Somerset, into believing that her roof needed to be completely replaced. Richards, operating under the name MR Build IT Property Maintenance, convinced the victim to pay £27,500 for the unnecessary work. Distressed and feeling scammed, the woman reported the incident to Avon and Somerset Police, who then contacted Heart of the South West Trading Standards for further investigation.

An independent surveyor appointed by the trading standards organization examined the roof and found that the work was not reasonably necessary, overcharged, did not align with standards, and required additional remedial work. Consequently, Richards was prosecuted under the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008.

In court, Richards pleaded guilty, and District Judge Brereton acknowledged his remorse and willingness to compensate the victim. However, he was ordered to pay a fine of £6,500, a victim surcharge of £190, £4,250 towards prosecution costs, and £27,500 in compensation to the elderly woman.

This is not the first instance of Richards posing as a Good Samaritan. Just a few weeks before the roofing scam, he had contacted a local newspaper, the Swindon Advertiser, after a young mother had £150 stolen from her purse while shopping. He offered to replace the stolen money, stating that he believed in helping those less fortunate. However, it is now evident that Richards had a hidden agenda and had engaged in fraudulent activities.

Alex Fry, operations manager for Heart of the South West Trading Standards, emphasized that this case serves as a message to other rogue traders operating in the area. He thanked the victim for reporting the incident and supporting the investigation, highlighting the importance of community awareness in combating scams.

Cllr Ros Wyke, Somerset Council lead member for economic development, planning, and assets, commended the trading standards service for taking rogue traders to court. She urged individuals to remain vigilant and seek assistance from reliable sources, such as Citizens Advice, if they suspect fraudulent activities. She also reminded the public that genuine traders should welcome scrutiny.

This case highlights the importance of consumer protection and the need to exercise caution when dealing with traders. Seniors, in particular, are vulnerable to scams and should be encouraged to seek advice and support when making financial decisions. Authorities and organizations like Heart of the South West Trading Standards play a vital role in safeguarding the community against rogue traders, ensuring trust and accountability in the marketplace.
