Delhi Government Plans Artificial Rain to Combat Air Pollution

The Delhi government is taking innovative measures to combat the severe air pollution crisis in the capital city. In an effort to improve the air quality, the government plans to induce artificial rain through cloud seeding. This comes after the city witnessed light showers that temporarily washed away hazardous particles and provided some relief to the air quality.

Despite the recent showers, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) still classifies the air quality in Delhi as poor. The air quality index (AQI) in various areas of the city remains alarmingly high, with Anand Vihar recording an AQI of 282, RK Puram at 220, Punjabi Bagh at 236, and ITO at 263.

Delhi has been struggling with severe air pollution for several weeks, and it was even deemed the most polluted city in the world last Thursday. The pollution levels were found to be up to 100 times higher than the acceptable limit set by the World Health Organization.

To address this pressing issue, the Delhi government is now considering cloud seeding or artificial rain as a potential solution. Cloud seeding involves the process of dispersing substances into the air to stimulate the formation of rain or snow. By inducing artificial rain, the aim is to cleanse the atmosphere of pollutants and bring relief to the residents of Delhi.

To ensure the success of this initiative, the Delhi government has pledged to cover the entire cost of artificial rain. Additionally, it has directed the chief secretary to present the government’s perspective on this matter to the Supreme Court.

But how exactly does cloud seeding work and how will it contribute to reducing pollution levels? Let’s delve further into this innovative approach.

Cloud seeding involves dispersing materials, such as silver iodide or potassium iodide, into clouds. These particles act as nuclei around which water vapor can condense, leading to the formation of raindrops or snowflakes. By introducing these nuclei into the clouds, the hope is to enhance the precipitation process and effectively wash away pollutants from the air.

While cloud seeding shows promise as a potential solution to combat air pollution, it is important to acknowledge that it is not a standalone remedy. Other significant measures, such as reducing emissions from vehicles and industries, improving waste management, and promoting green initiatives, are equally crucial in addressing the root causes of air pollution. The government’s efforts should focus on implementing a comprehensive strategy that tackles pollution from all angles.

In conclusion, the Delhi government’s plan to induce artificial rain through cloud seeding to combat air pollution is a commendable step in the right direction. However, it should be seen as part of a larger strategy that incorporates multiple approaches to address the underlying causes of pollution. By adopting a holistic approach and engaging in sustainable practices, Delhi can hope to overcome its air pollution crisis and provide its residents with cleaner and healthier air to breathe.
