Ghanaian Music Star Black Sherif Reflects on School Memories, Including Use of Corporal Punishment

Ghanaian musician, Mohammed Ismail Sherif, widely known as Black Sherif, recently shared some nostalgic memories from his school days. In an interview that quickly went viral after he clinched the Best International Flow award at the prestigious BET Hip Hop Awards 2023, Black Sherif took a trip down memory lane, particularly reflecting on the use of corporal punishment in schools.

While efforts are underway to discourage the use of corporal punishment in Ghanaian education institutions, it remains a prevalent disciplinary method employed by some teachers. Black Sherif, known for being a well-behaved student, admitted that he also faced occasional punishment during his school years.

However, Black Sherif fondly reminisced about his favorite teacher, Madam Isabella, who was known for her kindness and compassion. It should be noted that Black Sherif attended Pinamang Educational Complex in Konongo where he was taught by Madam Isabella in Primary 2.

Responding to the viral video, Isabella Mpaa, the beloved teacher herself, confirmed Black Sherif’s calm and respectful demeanor during his time as her student. While acknowledging the reputation of African teachers resorting to corporal punishment, she emphasized that it is solely intended to instill discipline in children.

Black Sherif was one of my pupils, and he was always calm and respectful. Regarding African teachers’ use of corporal punishment, I would say it is not deliberate, but rather a means of effectively training our children. African teachers truly are the best, said Madam Isabella.

Black Sherif rose to fame in 2021 with his hit song First Sermon, released in May. Since then, he has established himself as one of the most prominent musicians in Africa.

As efforts continue to address the issue of corporal punishment in Ghanaian schools, Black Sherif’s reflections provide a glimpse into the stark reality faced by many students. While experiencing occasional punishment, his positive memories of a nurturing teacher highlight the need for a balanced approach to discipline in educational settings.

It is essential that educators strive to cultivate an environment that promotes respect, understanding, and learning without resorting to physical punishment. With ongoing discussions and efforts to address this issue, Ghanaian schools can continue to evolve and create positive experiences for their students.

In conclusion, Black Sherif’s school memories shed light on the persistence of corporal punishment in Ghanaian education and the need for alternative disciplinary methods. By emphasizing the importance of nurturing teachers like Madam Isabella, the conversation around discipline and education can move towards a more compassionate and effective approach for the benefit of all students.
