Stratford District Council Launches £100K Climate Change Fund to Tackle Emergency

Stratford District Council has taken a significant step in addressing the climate emergency by establishing the Stratford Community Climate Change Fund. With an initial cash infusion of £100,000 from the climate change reserve, the fund aims to support local climate change initiatives proposed by community organizations. This decision was made by the council’s Cabinet during a meeting on November 6.

Councillor Susan Juned, leader of the Stratford District Council, emphasized the importance of the fund as part of their response to the climate emergency. She acknowledged the excellent work already being done within the district’s communities to reduce carbon footprints and mitigate the effects of climate change. Coun Juned expressed her hopes that numerous community groups would apply for funding to make Stratford district sustainable for current and future generations.

Town and parish councils, as well as community groups and charities, will have the opportunity to apply for grant funding through the Stratford Community Climate Change Fund. The fund will be implemented in phases, with annual launches that allow for adjustments to criteria based on any emerging policy changes and shifting priorities in relation to the worsening impacts of climate change.

To foster community engagement and encourage project proposals, the council plans to unveil the fund at a local climate engagement event in the district. This event will provide interested parties with the platform to develop and present their project ideas.

In 2019, Stratford District Council declared a climate emergency and announced three climate ambitions to be achieved by 2030. To support these ambitions, the council has set aside approximately £1.2 million in its climate change reserve.

By establishing the Stratford Community Climate Change Fund, Stratford District Council aims to empower and support local initiatives that contribute to tackling the climate emergency. With grant funding available for community organizations, the council strives to enhance the district’s efforts in reducing carbon emissions and adapting to the challenges of a rapidly changing climate.

This move by the council exemplifies their commitment to addressing the climate emergency head-on and working collaboratively with the community to create a more sustainable future.
