OpenAI Launches GPTs: Customized Chatbot Building Made Accessible

OpenAI, the leading artificial intelligence startup based in San Francisco, has unveiled a groundbreaking service that enables individuals and small businesses to create and customize their own versions of ChatGPT, OpenAI’s popular online chatbot. This service, called GPTs, allows users to effortlessly build chatbots tailored to specific tasks, without the need for additional software or coding knowledge. By democratizing the process of chatbot creation, OpenAI aims to empower a wide range of users, from bed-and-breakfast owners to language teachers and interior designers.

Peter Deng, OpenAI’s vice president of consumer and enterprise product, expressed his excitement about the endless possibilities presented by GPTs. He envisions chatbots that specialize in teaching languages or providing interior design advice, thereby addressing unique user needs. With the introduction of GPTs, OpenAI has accelerated its drive to outpace rival companies in the chatbot space.

GPTs is available to users of ChatGPT Plus, a subscription-based version of the chatbot priced at $20 per month. While countless software developers are already leveraging the underlying technology, GPT-4, in their applications, OpenAI recognizes the untapped potential in attracting individuals and small businesses without prior coding experience. GPTs simplifies the customization process by requiring users to provide only a set of instructions and, in some cases, upload relevant documents. For instance, a bed-and-breakfast owner can easily design a chatbot that answers guests’ questions by uploading the establishment’s existing guest manual.

However, OpenAI acknowledges the potential for mistakes due to the scale of data on which ChatGPT is trained. Technologies like ChatGPT can occasionally generate inaccurate or offensive content, a phenomenon referred to as hallucination. To combat this issue, OpenAI will carefully vet all new bots created with GPTs, ensuring compliance with its terms of service. In the coming weeks, OpenAI plans to offer these chatbots through an app store similar to Apple’s platform for iPhone applications.

Addressing concerns raised by users, OpenAI guarantees that any data or documents shared with the service will not be utilized to train future iterations of its technology upon request. OpenAI currently faces legal action from individuals who claim that their work was unlawfully used to develop its AI systems.

Despite these challenges, OpenAI reports that ChatGPT is actively used by over 100 million people worldwide each week, while GPT-4 and other services have attracted more than 2 million software developers, who employ them to build innovative applications.

With OpenAI’s launch of GPTs, the potential applications of chatbot technology have become even more accessible. By providing a user-friendly platform for customization, OpenAI seeks to revolutionize the way individuals and businesses interact with AI, showcasing the power and versatility of conversational artificial intelligence.
