Hamas Utilizes Drones in Recent Attacks, U.S. Drone Assists in Hostage Recovery Efforts in Gaza
In a recent conflict between Hamas and Israel, Hamas fighters surprised the world by employing a fleet of drones to carry out deadly attacks. These drones, many of which were commercial off-the-shelf models modified to carry explosives, played a key role in Hamas’ elaborate assault on Israel.

Hamas claims to possess kamikaze drones capable of loitering in the air for extended periods before self-destructing upon impact with a target. While propaganda videos have featured these fixed-wing drones, there is no evidence to suggest that they have caused any damage within Israeli territory.
Interestingly, it was recently discovered that the United States had been conducting covert reconnaissance drone flights over Gaza. Aviation enthusiasts monitoring public flight-tracking websites spotted a US MQ-9 Reaper drone taking off from an aircraft carrier before flying over the southern region of Gaza for several hours. The US confirmed that this drone was deployed to aid in hostage recovery efforts following Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7.
The MQ-9 Reaper is an elite drone worth around $56 million. With an impressive altitude range and long endurance of up to 27 hours, this drone comes equipped with high-tech cameras, sensors, and radar systems. Although it has the capacity to carry air-to-ground missiles, the US government emphasized that the drones flying over Gaza were unarmed and solely used for gathering intelligence.
The exact nature of the information collected by the US drone remains unclear, considering that the hostages are believed to be held within Hamas’ intricate network of tunnels. However, it is possible that the drone is monitoring movements in southern Gaza to identify entry points into the tunnel system or gathering signals intelligence (SIGINT) by intercepting communications in the hope of obtaining clues about the hostages’ location.
Freeing the hostages is a top priority for Israeli authorities, but it is uncertain whether they plan to negotiate with Hamas or attempt a rescue mission within the perilous tunnel network. These tunnels span an estimated 200 to 300 kilometers and are considered highly dangerous by Israeli forces.
If Israeli soldiers were to venture into the tunnels, it is likely that ground robots and drones would be deployed first to assess the situation. The Lanius, a small quadcopter drone capable of navigating confined spaces, could potentially carry explosives to neutralize any adversaries encountered within the tunnels. However, it remains unclear whether the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) has tested its drone arsenal within the Hamas tunnels, leaving doubts about the effectiveness of their communication and navigation systems.
Ultimately, once Israeli forces enter the tunnels, they forfeit many of their technological advantages. In these narrow and treacherous spaces, soldiers must rely on their individual skills and be prepared to engage in one-on-one combat reminiscent of ancient warfare.
