President Biden to Attend G20 Summit in India, VP Harris Heads to ASEAN Summit in Indonesia

President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. is all set to participate in the upcoming G20 Leaders’ Summit in New Delhi, India, from September 7-10. This much-anticipated event will see President Biden join forces with his fellow G20 partners to address key global issues. The discussions will focus on several crucial topics, including the clean energy transition, combatting climate change, dealing with the economic and social impacts of the unrest in Ukraine, as well as empowering multilateral development banks like the World Bank to combat poverty.

During his visit to New Delhi, President Biden will take the opportunity to commend Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his exceptional leadership of the G20, while affirming the United States’ strong commitment to this international forum for economic cooperation. Moreover, President Biden will also reaffirm the U.S.’s dedication to hosting the G20 summit in 2026.

Simultaneously, Vice President Kamala Harris will be embarking on her own diplomatic mission to Jakarta, Indonesia, from September 4-7. Her visit will include attending the U.S.-ASEAN Summit and the East Asia Summit. Vice President Harris will engage with leaders from the Indo-Pacific region, focusing on a wide range of important topics such as the remarkable growth of U.S.-ASEAN relations, the United States’ unwavering commitment to Southeast Asia, and the centrality of ASEAN in regional affairs.

Through these dialogues and her various engagements, Vice President Harris will work towards advancing shared prosperity and security. Some key areas of focus will include addressing the climate crisis, promoting maritime security, fostering infrastructure development, boosting economic growth, upholding international rules and norms, and addressing other regional and global challenges.

It is worth mentioning that both President Biden and Vice President Harris have consistently prioritized engagement with ASEAN leaders. In fact, this visit builds upon their previous interactions, such as President Biden’s virtual participation in the U.S.-ASEAN Summit and East Asia Summit in November 2021, as well as his physical participation in the U.S.-ASEAN Summit and East Asia Summit in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, in November 2022. Vice President Harris has also played her part by visiting Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand, and the Philippines over the past year, thus further strengthening ties between the United States and ASEAN.

As the dates of the visits draw near, more specific details are expected to be revealed, including information about bilateral engagements. The administration is eagerly awaiting the opportunity to share further information in the near future.

In conclusion, President Biden’s attendance at the G20 Summit in India and Vice President Harris’s presence at the ASEAN Summit in Indonesia reflect the United States’ commitment to multinational cooperation on various global challenges. The discussions and engagements during these summits will undoubtedly contribute to fostering a more prosperous and secure world.
