Nagaland recently observed ‘World No Tobacco Fortnight,’ which began on May 31 and ended on June 15, coinciding with ‘World No Tobacco Day.’ The programme was held at the Medziphema community health centre, where speakers emphasized growing alternative crops instead of tobacco plants. Dr. Viphrezonuo Kuotsu, a junior dental surgeon, delivered a speech on the theme We need food, not tobacco, highlighting the importance of spreading awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco products, including smoking and smokeless tobacco.
During the fortnight, anti-tobacco counseling was conducted for outpatients, and the staff of CHC Medziphema took an anti-tobacco pledge at the culmination programme. The ill effects of tobacco not only harm smokers but also non-smokers through second-hand smoke exposure, which is equally dangerous. The observations during this fortnight were aimed at raising awareness about tobacco usage and its deleterious consequences.
Nagaland’s observance of ‘World No Tobacco Fortnight’ aligns with the World Health Organization’s (WHO) efforts to eradicate all forms of tobacco consumption and awareness about the multitude of health harms it causes. This fortnight is also part of WHO’s larger campaign to reduce the prevalence of non-communicable diseases, which is a major health concern worldwide.
In conclusion, it is essential to encourage the growth and use of alternative crops over tobacco cultivation and promote healthy lifestyles and habits. Awareness programs that educate individuals about the harmful effects of tobacco products and encourage them to quit smoking or other tobacco use can significantly reduce the incidence of tobacco-related diseases. Nagaland’s observance of ‘World No Tobacco Fortnight’ is a commendable effort in furthering this cause.
