Higher Education Commissioner Sparks Dispute in Delta State
The Higher Education Commissioner, Professor Nyerovwo Tonukari, has ignited a dispute in Delta State by allegedly locking out Lovette Idisi, the Chairman of the College Council. The disagreement stems from the appointment of a registrar for the College of Physical Education, Mosogar (COPEM).
Tensions have escalated at the college, with both parties involved making mutual accusations. Idisi claims that Tonukari prevented him from accessing his office as a result of the appointment issue. He alleges that the commissioner tried to disrupt the interview process, despite the presence of a quorum consisting of seven out of nine statutory members who conducted the interviews.
Furthermore, Idisi criticized Tonukari for producing a letter riddled with errors, falsehoods, and baseless claims.
The incident took place on November 3rd, 2023, when Idisi arrived at his office only to find the door locked. Expressing his bewilderment, he emphasized his position as Chairman of the Council and stressed that due process was followed during the interview process. Idisi contends that seven out of nine members attended, constituting a quorum as required. It appears that Tonukari had sent a letter falsely claiming that there was no quorum and that only five members had participated in the interviews.
Idisi firmly stated that the matter is already sub judice, meaning it is subject to a legal proceeding. He insisted that only a court of competent jurisdiction could alter the decision made by the council regarding the appointment of the registrar. Any action taken by individuals regarding the registrar’s position would be regarded as contempt of court.
Efforts to obtain a reaction from Professor Tonukari regarding the matter have been unsuccessful thus far.
This clash between the Higher Education Commissioner and the College Chairman has created unrest and animosity at the College of Physical Education, Mosogar, in Delta State. The dispute revolves around the appointment process of a registrar, with both sides presenting conflicting viewpoints. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how it will be resolved and what implications it might have for the institution and its stakeholders.
