Chicago Man Charged with Attempted Murder of State Trooper, Person of Interest in Homicide to Remain in Custody Until Trial
A Chicago man, Cristobal Santana, has been charged with attempted murder of an Illinois State Police trooper and is also identified as a person of interest in a Chicago homicide. Authorities have announced that Santana will remain in custody until his trial.
The charges against Santana were filed after state trooper Dakotah Chapman-Green was shot during a traffic stop on October 24. In addition to the attempted murder charge, Santana is also facing counts of aggravated battery to a police officer and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon. A judge has granted a petition from prosecutors to keep Santana jailed until his trial.
According to Illinois State Police Director Brendan F. Kelly, the incident occurred when Chapman-Green was conducting a traffic stop. During the conversation, Santana exited the vehicle and fired at least 10 shots at the trooper. Chapman-Green was hit by two of the shots and suffered severe injuries, including facial and skull fractures and a brain bleed. However, despite his injuries, Chapman-Green showed immense courage by pursuing Santana himself after the incident. He used his vehicle to apprehend Santana after a high-speed chase, striking him and causing him to be thrown across the road.
While Santana’s condition and location were not specified, authorities have confirmed that he is in custody and receiving appropriate medical care. The investigation into the Chicago homicide, for which Santana is considered a person of interest, is being handled by the Chicago Police Department. The victim of the homicide, Adrianna Lopez, was found fatally shot outside her home days before the incident involving Chapman-Green. Family members of Lopez have alleged that Santana, who is Lopez’s former boyfriend, had a history of violence towards her. However, Chicago police have not named any suspects in Lopez’s killing and no one is currently in custody in connection with the crime.
Lopez, a 41-year-old Chicago Public Schools special education and pre-K teacher, had filed for an order of protection against Santana just a month before her death. While it is unclear whether the order of protection had been granted, her family members have stated that they had seen video footage of the shooting, which occurred outside Lopez’s home in the Garfield Ridge neighborhood.
Colleagues, friends, and family members of Lopez gathered for a vigil in her honor, where they remembered her as a brave, kind, and nurturing individual. They emphasized Lopez’s desire for kindness among people while also encouraging them to stand up for themselves. Many attendees wore pink, Lopez’s favorite color, and placed flowers and candles on her front steps.
As the legal process moves forward, Santana will remain in custody until his trial. The authorities involved are keen on ensuring a fair investigation and trial for the alleged crimes committed by Santana.
