Tata Steel has partnered with Germany’s SMS group to develop a low carbon steel-making process. The partnership aims to demonstrate the effectiveness of SMS group’s EASyMelt technology, an electric-assisted syngas smelter that can be integrated into existing steel plants, in reducing carbon emissions. Tata Steel has set a goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2045 and is prioritizing decarbonisation. The joint industrial demonstration will take place at the company’s Jamshedpur plant and is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by over 50%. Both Tata Steel and SMS group will engage in further technical discussion to explore green steel production processes and access better technologies and processes to reduce carbon footprints. India is the world’s second-largest steel producer, and Tata Steel aims to lead the country’s decarbonisation journey.
