Spokane has recently been transformed into a hub for film and television productions, attracting the attention of filmmakers seeking diverse landscapes and convenient access. One such film, 213 Bones, has chosen the city as its setting, making use of various locations including Uncle Rusty’s Diner, Eastern Washington University, and homes in the South Hill neighborhood of Spokane and Cheney. The diner, now renamed Ernie’s Diner for the horror movie, was spotted by one of the producers who believed it would be the perfect backdrop for the film.

Originally planned to be filmed in the Seattle area, the production team soon realized that the locations and the Pacific Northwest aesthetic they were aiming for spoke to them in Spokane. John Michaels, the producer of 213 Bones, expressed his appreciation for the city’s appeal, emphasizing the diverse geography that can accommodate different filming needs. From the picturesque Mt. Spokane to gritty urban settings and the rolling wheat fields of the Palouse, Spokane offers a wide range of options for filmmakers to bring their stories to life. And with direct flights from Los Angeles to Spokane, it’s an easily accessible city for film crews.

Spokane’s emergence as a growing center for film and television productions can be attributed in part to the Motion Picture Competitiveness Program, established by the State Legislature in 2006. The program, managed by Washington Filmworks, aims to enhance and increase the competitiveness of the film industry in the state. It provides financial incentives for production companies to film in Washington, with specific requirements for in-state spending. For instance, movies must have at least $500,000 of in-state spending, while television shows and commercials require $300,000 and $150,000 respectively.

The continuous efforts of Washington Filmworks to stimulate the local film community have garnered support from filmmakers and financiers like Michaels, who sees the organization’s goals aligning with their own. By promoting the film industry in the area, Washington Filmworks contributes to the growth and development of the community, attracting more productions and boosting the local economy.

As for 213 Bones, the horror film being shot in Spokane, the producers are aiming to release it around Halloween in 2024. With the hope that the movie will achieve great success, Brian Northcraft, one of the owners of Uncle Rusty’s Diner, anticipates an increase in business as fans flock to the iconic filming location. Uncle Rusty’s Diner temporarily closed its doors on Monday and Tuesday to accommodate the film crew, but it will soon resume normal business operations on Wednesday.

Spokane’s rise as a popular destination for filmmakers showcases the city’s potential as a captivating backdrop for various genres. Its diverse landscapes, coupled with the support provided by programs like the Motion Picture Competitiveness Program, have positioned Spokane as an attractive location for film and television productions. With its growing reputation, the city continues to welcome filmmakers seeking unique settings to bring their stories to life on the big screen.
