At least 20 people are feared dead following a renewed clash between the Yache-Ijiegu community in Yala LGA of Cross River State and Tiv settlers from Benue State. The confrontation stems from a longstanding boundary dispute between the two groups. The violent clash resulted in numerous injuries, with many individuals sustaining gunshot and machete wounds. Reports indicate that houses on both sides were also set ablaze during the altercation.

The conflict reignited when Ayeku Godwin Ochuole, a resident of Yache, was fatally attacked and killed by Tiv assailants while working on his farm. This incident led to the abduction of at least nine other individuals who suffered bullet wounds. Augustine Odey, a youth leader in Yache, accused the governments of both states for their lack of proactive measures in preventing such clashes. He alleged that armed soldiers accompanied the Tiv settlers, contributing to the violence.

However, security operatives and army officers denied any involvement in the killings. Lieutenant Alex and Lieutenant H. J. Enoibor, the leaders of the security team, stated that the Yache boys have been hindering peace efforts. They emphasized the significance of achieving a peaceful resolution and have scheduled a joint peace meeting with all stakeholders on Wednesday in hopes of resolving the conflict amicably.

The boundary clashes between Yache-Ijiegu and Tiv settlers initially began approximately two months ago when the Tiv community allegedly refused to continue paying royalties for their occupancy of Yache lands.

The situation remains tense, with lives lost, injuries sustained, and properties destroyed. The clash highlights the urgent need for effective conflict resolution and the importance of addressing boundary disputes in a fair and inclusive manner. As both sides prepare for the peace meeting, it is hoped that a resolution can be reached to restore peace and prevent further loss of lives in the affected communities.
